The 26-year-old claimed his first-ever World Championship by winning four races and standing on the podium on five other occasions.

Coming into the last round of the season Garzo was in a title battle with Mattia Casadei, who ended up winning the race in Misano.

After the race, the new Champion said: “I still cannot believe it. It was a really hard day yesterday, so it was a really hard race to plan. I just trusted in myself and focussed on overtaking as many people as possible. I tried to not lose the gap to first place, but I also got a bit lucky. I feel sorry for Zannoni but I got lucky by getting the winning position.

“I think we deserve it because this year has been crazy and we have been at the top level. I think we deserve this and more. I have no words, thank you very much.”
